vividlyprosaic's Comments

"Men get sexually assaulted, men get abused, men have toxic gender stereotypes that they are expected to live up to. This is a problem, and I am more than willing to have discussions about this, and talk about what can be done to change these things if you bring it up as its own topic. However, if you bring these things up as an attempt to override discussions about women, I will not listen to you. If you really cared about men's issues, you'd bring it up at other times, not only when we're discussing women's issues. That's not you caring about men's issues. That's you not wanting to talk about women's issues because you want everything to be about men." Amirite?

I recently attended a two day workshop about male victims of domestic violence. It was very enlightening. One of the topics that came up is that male victims of DV are often brought to attention just to derail conversations about DV toward women. This has done little to help bring awareness, as many people (professionals, even) take this attempt to derail as evidence that DV toward men is a myth. Very interesting! πŸ€”I do agree with you 100% though.

It is true things are not as good as the old days...took Harry Potter 9 books to catch a bad guy and only 30 minutes for Scooby to do itπŸ™„

Harry Potter is 7 books long, not 9. Still funny though

How many languages can you **speak**?

No limit. After all, every language is simple enough that they make all the little kids learn it.

I have studied Latin, French, Japanese, Arabic, Italian, German, Spanish, Chinese, and a smattering of Koine Greek, but English is the only one I learned with any fluency.

Latin was the language of Latium, the first nation obliterated by the Romans. They adopted the language for all laws, records and education specifically because it was dead; no changes in meanings.

Arabic is so hard that even people born to it can't speak correctly all the time.

The first thirteen lessons of Chinese class were dedicated to drawing the characters correctly. No words, no grammar, only drawing the characters. I took another class where I learned over 200 words in a few weeks and still didn't know how to say anything.

I learnt the ASL alphabet once, and I don’t remember any of it, because I’ve never used it.

Yeah that happens a lot with ASL unfortunately. It's not a language that you get to practice as often as some other spoken languages. So it's easy to get out of practice. I took a year off when I was going through chemo and when I went back to work (I had two Deaf clients), it was almost like I had to relearn a lot of it. Now I make a point to practice regularly just in case I get another Deaf client in the future.

Trump is a racist idiot and also his duck lips are weird and gross

Ok true. But voting in the last election was like choosing between eating haggis stuffed with moldy watermelon and chicken beaks, OR donating a kidney with no anesthesia while tripping on acid. It was a lose-lose situation. I probably wouldn't have been happy with Hillary either.

Someone once told me that the definition of Hell is that “on that last day you have on earth, the person you became will meet the person you could have become.” The question is, who is the person you will face when your time comes? Will you have accomplished things that you wanted to accomplish? Would you have seen the things you wanted to see? Would you have experienced everything that you have always wanted to experience? I don’t know about you, but one of my biggest fears is feeling regret at the end of my life, knowing that I did not do all that I could have done. The average lifespan of a person living in the United States is 27,375 days. If you are 25 years old, you have 18,250 days left to live. If you are 50, you have 9,125 days to live. If you are 65, you have 3,650 days to live. How many days do you have left before it is too late to live the life you want? Despite the popular quote stating otherwise, there comes a time when it IS too late to be the person you could've been. I’ve got at most 14,600 days left to live my life, and I'm going to make them count by continuing to try to make a difference in this messed up world, traveling, reading books which make me think, spending time with people I love, and more. What do you want to do in the time you have left? If you died today, would you be satisfied with how you lived your life?

I've accomplished most of the things I wanted to do. I've had a good marriage, good kids. I've traveled quite a bit, and there's no place I want to go to now. Of course that might change tomorrow. lol No one wants to die, but if I died tonight, the only regret I would have is not seeing how the rest of my family turned out. I'm a Christian, and a believer so I know I will be going to a better place, and what I have left behind won't matter one little bit.

Just because I didn't post everything I know doesn't mean I'm ignorant about the topic. My foster mother had seahorses and I helped care for them. I don't understand why you persist in seeking me out to "subtly" insult me. Why the last part of the post? Why not just say you look up things that you find interesting? What's the point of making sure to mention what you think I "should have" done? I posted exactly the content I intended to post based on my own 9+ years of experience caring for seahorses.

Standard IQ tests in the USA are a poor measure of true intelligence.

Depends on how you define "true" intelligence. There are many ways in which a person can be intelligent or.. lacking... and not all of them are weighed equally

Wunderscore 20 days ago

In response to “Depends on how you define "true"...

Yes you're definitely right about that. I think there are many kinds of intelligence and it's impossible to really measure it, or even properly define it. At least using our current methods of testing, which are ethnocentric at best.
