"For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” - Matthew 18:20 Aren't Christian churches completely unnecessary? Does Jesus not say so in this verse?

A thought - if Jesus is saying that churches aren't needed, then why did he go to the synagogue regularly? A person goes to church to be taught, to worship, to draw strength from the camaraderie of fellow believers, and together as a congregation, a lot of community good can be done. The church I went to before I moved, provided all kinds of ministries to help people - free hair cuts for kids before school started, free backpacks, and ended up have so much money left over that they donated almost $2K to 5 different schools - that is just an example of what they did.
And, I'm definitely all for the 'where 2 or more have gathered in my name", as that can also be a time of teaching, of worship, camaraderie, etc.

I just feel like the spaces could be used for better things, even by churches

What I'm saying is, you can do all that stuff without the specific building, which in many cases, is pretty empty save for Sunday.

I would rather live my life as if there is a god and die to find out there isn't, than live my life as if there isn't and die to find out there is.

Sadly even the presumed existence of God doesn't stop people from committing terrible acts of violence.

How does a dude dying on a cross save people from sins?

This god knocked up a 12 year old girl, with himself, so he would be born on earth, so he could sacrifice himself to save you from the sin that he originally condemned you with...LMAO

Doom metal is excellent when you wanna chill out to some music.

Stevie Wonder was someone my parents listened to but not ponce as I call him. They were and still are (for the most part) heavy/progressive rock fans.

Then.. enlighten me. And I'm not meaning to say Jesus is saying don't gather in churches, just that I see the best use of resources aimed at gathering without buildings, which, it seems Jesus is saying, is fine.

"Marriage is a sacred bond between a man and a woman" Hillary Clinton What's wrong hillary ? Did you sell your soul to win power ?

Laws don't change religious beliefs? Just wait they are about too.
Law suits to force people go against the religious beliefs are already happening.
The next thing to happen in this wave of love from homosexuals is the government taking the religious tax exemptions away from any church that refuses to marry a homosexual couple.

Have you had an extreme change in perspective of something recently?

I went from Mormon to anti-religion within the last few months. It's quite the change. I've gradually changed political views over the years too....I went from conservative, to libertarian, to moderate, to liberal. I'm still against the two party system, however. I seriously doubt that will ever change.

I think if you need a fear of hell to do right, and you cant just do it on your own, you are a weak individual who needs to be scared into doing good because their basic nature is vile.

Why? What does it matter? I think there is no God, it doesn't make me have no morals or anything. Why do we need a god? Are we such savages that we have to fear a white bearded man in the sky to keep us from burning, pillaging and raping, to make the world a smoldering pile of ash simply because we won't be judged in the end?

To theists: would you date/marry an atheist? To atheists: would you date/marry a theist?

I mean it's only a part of me.

I'm artistic, enjoy singing, I like sweets, I'm Canadian. There's many different sections in my chart of pie life. Being an Atheist is just a small one.

I define it as not believing in any gods.

Why isn't religion pointless? Humans can teach morals without religion. Humans can have great lives without religion (E.g., Sweden is mostly atheistic). What is the point of religion (especially to theists, but atheists can comment as well)?

I'm not sure if it's inherent, but I at least know it's taught by the people you grow up around.

Well, one inherently seeks survival because one wishes to survive. I think it's related to that. But I could see how feeling that one is cared for isn't inherent
