OK, but how do you account for Japan having less than 10 gun-related death each year? Or, why does the U.S. have more gun-related deaths than any other "civilized" country?

You forget the "Yakuza"! They use guns but very little. Unfortunately, there are many ways to kill other than guns.

The Yakuza are like the Italian mob, though. We have the highest gun problem in the Western world.

yet Japan has the highest suicide rates. just because their is no guns does not mean the violence ends. you liberals need to wake up.

USA has a huge population, and please realize that the concentration of the gun related deaths are because of gun free zones like detroit, and is gang on gang violence. NICE try though

So you believe that the more guns there are in circulation, the less gun-related deaths there will be? That doesn't sound right.

Thanks for the reply! Okay, so maybe I'm wrong. (smile) I certainly never would have expected that.

There is also a supposedly strong correlation between the states with the highest gun ownership per household and the states with the highest gun mortality rates.

Like everything, the devil is in the details. Do the homicide rates count suicide deaths? What other factors might have contributed to the numbers? So while these maps and charts (yours included) suggest strong correlations, they say nothing of causation. There isn't just one number that can be used to explain this relationship.

I never claimed correlation equalled causation, Phil. Any lone statistic is simply one piece of the puzzle, something I assumed you understood.

Gun suicides have remained nearly stagnant as gun homicides have nearly halved. In the early 90s the ratio between gun suicides and murders was virtually 1:1, while now it is ~ 2:1.

Total gun deaths have still declined as compared to gun ownership rates because of the decline in gun murders. The decline in non-fatal gun vicitimizations has declined even more dramatically over the same period.

Guns do not cause suicide, Phil. If the efforts expended fighting for more gun control laws were redirected towards tackling the causes of suicide, it would benefit many aspects of society.

You can't equate a person who decides to take their own life with someone who decides to take it?

Detroit is not a gun-free zone. Michigan is an open-carry, shall-issue state where state law is preemptive.

A good point.

Excellent point. By this logic we should do away with all laws because they don't prevent criminals from committing crimes. Also yeah sure, civilians need assault rifles to "defend" themselves. In case someone breaks in your house and you need to shoot them 50 times.
