Yes, but that doesn't help with training raccoons. We don't have them over here. It's not a natural species, but I am thinking... Would the officials be too upset, if I introduced a twenty couples, as in forty, into our nature... I mean, they would love it here. We barely have any proper winters here, thanks to both the official reasons and the fact, that the Sun is not working properly... It's peaking out now, but watch out for the upcoming mini ice-age...

I heard about the upcoming mini ice-age from the taxi driver.

Perhaps you could keep the raccoons in your home. The Safe House.

I used to have a ferret that looked like a raccoon. She had that mask.

Let's come back to raccoons. They are not native to Europe, and they should not be released into nature, as they are considered an invasive species. The culprits for their introduction in Europe and elsewhere were mainly fur farms, and later on pet holders!

But keeping them as pets is not really recommended, as they need safe enclosures with much natural space, with trees, playing, exploring and hiding opportunities.

As for training, the clicker and target training might help - with much patience:

People keep tigers as pets, even here in Europe.

At least they can eat you up.

Tigers are no pets, and neither are other wild animals, especially when these animals are endangered in their natural environment. And pet or captive animals cannot live according to their natural needs.

They are breeding endangered species in captivity, but it takes much time, patience, special facilities and substancial means to prepare the animals to be released to survive in their natural environment and keep away from humans.
Specialised, internationally recognised zoos and sanctuaries are trying to breed and reintroduce endangered and rare species into their natural habitat since many years ...

I will have a baboon as a pet, when I grow up.

I knew a lady in blue hill maine she rescued porcupines and whatever else came her way. Her son came to visit me once and he had quills in his socks ouch. They had a lot of animals a crow who was kinda kooky, it had been hit by a car and they got it back on it's feet but it couldn't go outside cause it didn't know anything. It became similar to a parrot saying many words especially when someone talked on the phone. The healthfood store gave them all wilted produce they fed it to horses. So those horses smelled like sub sandwiches, garlic tomatoes and green pepper.

Yes they can be domesticated to a certain point. Several animals are like this like Fennek fox or a marten. The issue is you must give them space and room to do wild things.

Well, I think it wasn't a straight-forward process, when human beings started to turn wolves into dogs, either.

I see absolutely no reason, why a raccoon wouldn't be the dog of the future. They are clearly extremely clever and thus, they should be trainable.

A few wild animal species can be "domesticated", but it takes a long time, much patience and work, and selective breeding:

My mother rescued a baby racoon, many years ago...before me.
Named him black bart.
He got on well with my dads pointer, rex.

He had the run of the wild of our home for four or five years. Then disappeared.
She also rescued a baby skunk. Never sprayed her. He was around for a couple of years.

Then, when she moved north, she fed a host of racoons on a platform outside her bay window.

One, she named precious, came always, for several years. She would bring a litter of babies each year when they were old enough. Mom could have touched her, but refrained.
The last year she came, you could tell she was old.....she disappeared too.

Raccoons are delightful creatures....

My only real encounter with raccoons was back in 2003, when I was living in Dallas.

My ex girlfriend had decided to leave me (once again), so I had no place to stay. I went to take a nap on the shoulder of a highway. An hour or two later, I woke up, as a raccoon was inspecting me, as if I was edible or not. That's the first and the only time I have actually seen one, but I thought... "That is one interesting creature!"

What is? A chihuahua doesn't look like a wolf, but is still agressive towards other dogs, which, may I remind you, are just domesticated and selectively breeded wolves.

The big cats didn't just turn to furry little things by accident, either. People turned them to trust them and now they are still a menace, but at least not going to eat you every time you open the door. Why wouldn't all of this selective breeding stuff (hey, we have DNA manipulation now!) work on raccoons as well?
