Oh I agree. Sadly I am right where you are now. Its why I am job hunting now. Don't stay at a job that makes you feel miserable, there are good companies out there.
Sometimes you have to forget about your dignity if you really need the job.
If I'm financially safe, I guess my dignity could come first, but if that job was my only income and I had no funds, my dignity could take some hits. I prefer being miserable and well feed, than keeping my dignity intact and starve or lose where I live. At least well feed I'll have the ability to rise up and gain my happiness back later in my life.
I only have myself to worry about so when/if they try and threaten or bully me thinking that I can't retaliate because I have responsibilities like all the others, they discover that I'm the person who has nothing to lose.
I find that most of it is just a bad manager exercising their authority for no good reason, and when you challenge them on reasonable grounds, they usually back down.
